Student Employment Opportunities

The Office of Academic Advising often has student employment openings for tutors, study consultants, and note takers.

Tutors

Tutors are graduate or undergraduate students at JHU who work on course-specific material with students currently enrolled in the class. Tutors work with and lead small study groups approximately 2 - 6 hours per week.

Tutors must be available to lead a group during Learning Den hours and must be devoted to their assignment(s) throughout the semester, including reading period.

Eligible tutors must have earned an “A” in the specific JHU course being tutored. They must also have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or higher. (Exceptions may be possible on a case by case basis.) All tutors must attend training before receiving tutoring assignments.

We are now hiring tutors for the Fall term.

Study Consultants

Study consultants are either graduate students or seniors in good academic standing with effective study skills, organizational skills, and the desire to help other students. Consultants typically are matched with one to three students with whom they meet individually, one hour per week. The consultant and student determine when and where to meet. For more information please call 410-516-5506.

Note Takers

Note Takers are hired through the Office of Student Disability Services to provide class notes to students with disabilities. In order to receive notes, a student must provide all necessary documentation of his or her disability to Dr. Richard Sanders in the Office of Student Disability Services. The Disability Services Coordinator will arrange to find a Note taker for any courses requested.

To qualify to become a note taker, you must attend every class for which you are taking notes regularly, have well-organized notes, and neat, legible handwriting. Note takers provide copies of their notes by either making photocopies in the Office of Student Disability Services, or by sending typed or scanned notes via email to notetaking@jhu.edu. The transfer of notes to students in need will be arranged through Disability Services- both the Note taker and the student(s) receiving his or her notes will remain anonymous to one another. Note takers are paid $85.00 per course at the end of a successfully completed semester. If you are interested in becoming a Note taker, please contact the Student Disability Services Assistant by e-mail at notetaking@jhu.edu, or by calling (410)516-4720. You may be hired if you meet the above criteria, and if a match is found between the courses you are taking and a course in which a Notetaker is needed.
